Broadband Internet access has created new opportunities for people wishing to work from home. Internet telephony and remote PC access is helping the self employed to run a ‘virtual office’. However, working from home in rural Dorset sole traders can easily feel isolated and lacking in support.
Help is at hand with two local Dorset business clubs/groups that offer the opportunity to network and share ideas with like minded sole traders and small business owners.
Rural Dorset Business Clubs
Is run by Business Link and seeks to support, inform and provide a forum for discussion. Club meetings are good social events and take place in a variety of convenient locations. There are six regional groups within Dorset, with the Marshwood Club covering the Lyme Regis, Beaminster and Bridport areas.
Each club meets at 6.30pm on a bi monthly basis. The informal, friendly and relaxed meetings begin with a one course hot supper followed by coffee which gives everyone the opportunity to network and exchange ideas. At each meeting there are two six minute presentations from the membership, followed by the main presentation of the evening by an industry expert.
Membership is free and since the 1st March 2009 there are no costs to members for suppers served at the business club meetings. More details can be found on the Rural Dorset Business Club website. Due to government cutbacks Business Link will continue to run the club until November 2011 and will then be run by Rural Net.
