In a recent article I wrote about free software tools available from Google. Following are two other programs which you may find useful:
OpenOffice.org
You receive a document, and your word processor is unable to open the file. The most likely reason is the document has been created by a different word processor to the one you use on your PC or has been saved in a later version of the software – Microsoft Word 97 and 2003 (.doc) is not able to open a document saved in Microsoft 2007 (.docx). To overcome this problem, computer users are now switching to the freeware program OpenOffice.org instead of paying for an upgrade to the latest Microsoft Office Suite.
OpenOffice.org is the leading open-source office software suite developed by Sun Microsystems for word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, presentations, and databases. It stores all your data in an open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded from www.openoffice.org and used completely free of charge on as many PCs as you like. Once you download OpenOffice.org you can select to install the full suite of programs or an individual program like the word processor.
PDF995
PDF995 allows you to save a file, for example a document or spreadsheet, as a pdf file. The .pdf file, be it an invoice or article, can be viewed on any computer with a pdf viewer. Adobe Reader is the most common pdf viewer. PDF995 is available from www.pdf995.com. Once installed, the program can be selected from the “print” command that lists your printer(s) and the document is saved as a .pdf file. A short advert is displayed while the file is being saved.
